Social [\[CV(1\]](#_msocom_1) distancing, also called “physical distancing,” means keeping space between yourself and other people outside of your home.  Most essential businesses should be practicing social distancing _to the maximum extent feasible_ [\[ME(2\]](#_msocom_2) [\[HM(3\]](#_msocom_3) [\[CV(4\]](#_msocom_4) by:

*   Maintaining at least six (6) feet of distance from other individuals;
*   Washing hands with soap and water for at least twenty (20) seconds or using hand sanitizer frequently, or after contact with potentially-infected surfaces, to the greatest extent feasible;
*   Covering coughs or sneezes, preferably with a tissue immediately disposed of, or into the sleeve or elbow, not hands;
*   Regularly cleaning high-touch surfaces; and
*   Not shaking hands.

Additionally, under the Mayor’s Orders, all food retailers shall implement the following guidelines throughout the duration of the emergency.  DOH is handling enforcement of this order for all grocery stores, but DOB is addressing complaints about convenience/corner stores.   

Some of these requirements [\[CV(5\]](#_msocom_5) for food retailers include:

*   Providing signage at each entrance of the business, instructing customers on how to keep themselves and others safe;
*   Limiting the number of customers who can enter the business at one time;
*   Requiring six (6) feet distance from one another in the business;
    1.  Mark this six (6) foot distance wherever lines may form, both inside and outside the business; and
    2.  Where possible, mark paths and require store aisles to be one-way;
*   Installing plexiglass or plastic dividers between customers and employees at registers if the register generally services more than fifty (50) customers per day;
*   Disinfecting high-touch surfaces, including all break rooms, bathrooms, and administrative areas.

Importantly, all employees of food sellers are required to wear gloves and masks (cloth or surgical masks) and instruct employees on the safe use. All gloves and masks shall be procured by the business.  There are a number of other requirements for food retailers in the attached reference document[\[CV(6\]](#_msocom_6) [\[HM(7\]](#_msocom_7) .

At this time there is no dining on the premise. This includes patios, summer gardens (Private property) and sidewalk/outdoor cafes (Public Space)
