Yes, a permit is required for a residential roof replacement. 

You will need an Alteration and Repair Permit.

Step 1: If you live in a row house, you will be required to notify your neighbor on either side that you, about the work on your roof.  Information regarding Neighbor Notification can be found [here](https://eservices.dcra.dc.gov/DocumentManagementSystem/Home/retrieve?id=Neighborhood%20Notification%20Tool%20User%20Guide.pdf).

Step 2: Complete your permit application online.   You will need to create a DOB user account if you don’t have one.   [Online Construction Permit Intake (OCPI)](https://acaprod9.dcra.dc.gov/CitizenAccess/Default.aspx?culture=en-US) 

You will need a copy of the construction contract and if applicable a copy of the neighbor notification letter to upload.  

Step 3: Once you up pay the fee and are issued a Permit Number email the Homeowner Center.  The subject line should read: Roofing - _<insert the permit number provided.>_  Note a TMP number is not your permit number.  

Step 4: Your permit review will be completed the next day and if everything is in order will be issued.
