# Language Access Definitions

Limited English Proficient (LEP) Refers to an individual who does not speak English as his/her primary language and has a limited ability to speak, read, write, or understand English.

Non-English Proficient (NEP) Refers to an individual who cannot speak or understand the English language at any level.

Translation - The written conversation of texts in the source language into text written in the target language, retaining the meaning and intent of the original source text and producing a culturally competent product.

Interpretation - Oral or verbal conversation of the meaning of dialogue from one language to another and vice versa.
